Solar Eclipse

Dear Cardinal Mooney Community,

On Monday August 21st, there will be an eclipse of the sun. In Sarasota, the maximum view time occurs at 2:50 pm. Since the maximum view happens after school hours, we will not be offering a program at school. We will speak again to the student body about what is happening on Monday and the potential effects that looking into the sun can have on their eyesight. Our science teachers will also be speaking about this in classes. We will be suspending all out-door activities on Monday until 4:15 PM to avoid potential exposure. We ask that you reinforce the importance of this with your kids this weekend.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters. This does NOT include unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars and sunglasses. This includes the ordinary sunglasses that most of us wear.

Thank you,
Stefan Gates
