COUGARS IN THE CLASSROOM

FHSAA Academic Team Champion Award Nominees for Spring Sports

The FHSAA Academic Team Champion recognition program honors teamwork not only in competition but in the classroom as well. All team members listed on its varsity roster are used to compile the cumulative team grade point average. The team aggregate GPA is submitted for nomination. Spring teams use the first semester cumulative unweighted GPA.

First, we are so proud to announce that ALL 9 of our varsity spring sports teams improved on their team GPA from last year.  Five of our spring teams finished in the TOP 25 in their designated FHSAA classification.  Two teams finished in the TOP 10: Girls Track & Field – 7th and Boys Weightlifting – 10th.  Girls Lacrosse finished 11th and Boys Lacrosse and Boys Track and Field both finished 25th.

These awards are also presented for the fall and winter sports.  In the winter, the Cougar team with the highest GPA was Girls Weightlifting with a team GPA of 3.60.  The top two sports in the fall were Girls Golf with a 3.745 and Girls Cross Country with a 3.703 which marks our highest two teams for the year.  Congratulations to our Cougars in the classroom!!

A note from the FHSAA

Following Governor Ron DeSantis’ announcement mandating schools continue distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, it is with heavy hearts that the FHSAA has decided to cancel all FHSAA affiliated events, inclusive of the state series and all championship events, for spring sports. The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans is our top priority. With the evolving threat of the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), we must ensure that we do not contribute to the spread of this illness. We are deeply saddened for our student-athletes who have seen their seasons and/or high school careers end so abruptly. Our Association knows the impact and role high school athletics play in the lives of so many and will continue to work towards the betterment of high school sports. We know this is a trying time, but the health and safety of all is of utmost importance to this Association.

To all our senior student-athletes, we thank you for dedicating your time and efforts to your school, your coaches, and your teammates. Cherish the memories you have made and embrace all that the future holds for you. While we are saddened that you are unable to compete this season, we could not be prouder to have been represented by such hard-working individuals.

Athletics Mission

Athletics at CMHS is an important part of our broader mission to develop young men and women into people of great character. Outstanding coaches and programs help students develop discipline, place others before self, and handle both joy and disappointments with grace and a generous spirit. In a real way, then, athletics is best understood as “co-curricular” with our overall program at CMHS.
Over 75% of CMHS students participate in at least one sport in any given year, and some may participate in more. By fielding 28 different teams in 14 sports, we encourage and invite our students to live a commitment to the development of the spirit, mind, and body.
