SWIMMING…Mooney state-qualifying swimmer brings home the bronze

Coach Alice Smithers and the “C-MOO Swim Crew” had a stellar season.  At the District Championship Meet, the team had several Top 3 finishers.  Senior Jillian Santiago defended her title from last year in the 200 freestyle by finishing 1st in that event and then took 2nd in the 100 freestyle.  Teammate and fellow senior Katherine Pepe was 2nd in the 100 breaststroke and 3rd in the 100 butterfly.  The relay team of Santiago, Pepe, freshman Cameron Ward and senior Cogan Brooks took 2nd in both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays at districts.  On the boy’s side, sophomore Callum Grobler (200 free and 100 breaststroke) and junior Justin Resnick (100 freestyle) also advanced to the Regional Championship meet.

At the 1A Region 3 Championships, Santiago claimed first place finishes in both of her individual events and earned herself an automatic bid to the State Championship.  The relay team of Brooks, Pepe, Santiago and Ward took 6th in the 200 Medley Relay and 5th in the 200 Freestyle Relay.  Katherine Pepe was also a Top 10 finisher in the Regional Meet in both of her individual events with a 7th in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 100 butterfly.

At the State Championship, Jillian claimed the bronze medal in the 200 freestyle at the High School State Swimming Championships on Saturday.  She took 3rd with a personal best time and her highest place finish of her high school swimming career.  She also finished 10th in the 100 freestyle.  Jillian has committed to attending and continuing her swimming career at James Madison University next fall.
