One school activity that interests me is the swim team. While High School swimming is a very competitive sport, the Cardinal Mooney Swim Team is extremely welcoming to anyone who may be interested. When I joined the team I had never swam on a team, let alone swim competitively. We practiced Monday-Friday from 3:30-6:00 pm with an occasional morning practice, if needed. Our practice included warm-up exercises for thirty minutes of: stretching, running, lifting weights, and jump roping. Everyday, the practice sets had different names… Monster Mondays, T-Shirt Tuesday (we would have a whole practice with swimming with our t-shirts on to create drag), Coach’s Favorite Set Wednesday, Long Distance Thursday’s, and Fun Friday. I ended up making it to the Regional Championship on a relay as a total “newbie” during my freshmen year. I credit this achievement to the help of our wonderful coach, Alice Smithers.
One of my favorite events from being on the CMHS Swim Team was the Special Olympics. This meet is the first one of the fall season and it is the most fun! The Team volunteers by helping swimmers with disabilities compete. When the swimmers are not competing we have time to socialize in order to get to know each other. Most of the swimmers walk around between events with huge smiles on their faces. I believe that this opportunity is a great way to start the season for it helps us focus on just how blessed we are.
If you are interested in joining the Cougar Swim Team, watch for one of our spring or fall meetings!
